Statement from the Karuk Tribal Council:

As Tribal Council, we take the safety and well-being of youth and families as our highest priority.

Tribal Council was made aware of an incident of neglect that happened at our Head Start in Yreka. This incident was immediately investigated.

The Tribal Council made the decision to terminate all employees involved after video evidence confirmed the neglect took place and the investigation confirmed the employees failed to meet their legal obligations as mandatory reporters.

We have informed the Office of Head Start and appropriate authorities of this matter. The matter is now under investigation by the Office of Head Start, CPS, and local law enforcement. We will cooperate fully with their investigations. The Tribal Council is working with Counsel and the CEO to put in place policies to ensure that this never happens again. We honor our children and take their safety seriously.

During this time, we ask for patience and understanding as appropriate processes are followed to protect the privacy of youth and families involved. Our communities’ health, safety and trust remain at the center of all decisions and actions moving forward. We remain committed to ensuring that all concerns are addressed with care, accountability and respect for those impacted.

If any parents have any concerns or need supportive services for their children or themselves they may contact Karuk Tribe CEO Eli Hensher-Aubrey at 530-493-1600.
