People's Center Museum & Gift Shop
Opened in September 2002, the Karuk People’s Center is home to a museum, library, gift shop, Basketweaving classroom, archive, and the Karuk Language Program Office. The People’s Center is committed to maintaining an active schedule of public programs for the purpose of increasing public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the centrality of Karuk art, history, and culture in our lives

Karuk Museum
Our Museum is dedicated to the study, practice, collection, and display of the art and culture of Karuk people. We curate exhibits to tell a story, provide education, and promote Native interpretations of Native American art, practice, and development. Additionally, the Museum is home to a community library, whose collection includes a range of books devoted to: California Indian Studies, Native American Studies, local history, children’s books, young adult books, and more.
Traditonal Karuk Basket Weaving
The basketweaving classes are on pause, but when they run they are held in the weaving room in the People's Center every Sunday from 12:00 to 3:00 pm and are led by master Karuk basket weaver, Brittany Souza. Although not a requirement, attendees are encouraged to bring their own material for weaving. Students learn about materials traditional to Karuk Basketry, how to weave open and closed weave baskets, and how to prepare materials. Identified program needs for a dedicated environmental education program, supporting traditional and western scientific knowledge to inform and augment long-term co-management within Karuk ancestral homelands; build upon and formalize our current pilot programs to educate tribal and non-tribal Youth in cultural relevant and academically and vocationally challenging programs; and address high rates of unemployment and poverty among the tribal membership.
Please call and inquire on the next available classes!
