The Karuk Tribe’s Health & Human Services Departments provide compassionate, culturally grounded care that supports the wellbeing of our people and communities. We connect families with medical, dental, behavioral health, and social services that honor tradition while meeting today’s needs.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Karuk Health and Human Services Departments is to provide comprehensive, culturally grounded, and high-quality care that supports the whole person and community. The Health Department is dedicated to delivering medical, dental, and preventative services that promote physical wellness in an environment of continuous quality improvement.

The Human Services Department is committed to empowering individuals and families through behavioral health, Substance Use Disorder, wellness, recovery, and social support programs that foster self-sufficiency and resilience. Together, the Departments advance wellness, dignity, and balance for Karuk people and the communities we serve.

Services Provided

Outreach & local Services

We help ensure access to care by offering outreach and transportation assistance. Our team coordinates rides and support services so community members can attend medical, dental, and wellness appointments without barriers.

Primary Care Appointments

Our clinics provide comprehensive primary care, including same-day visits, check-ups, and treatment for illness or injury. We focus on quality care that meets the needs of individuals and families.

Women's Health Clinics

Women’s health services include reproductive care, prenatal and postpartum support, cancer screenings, and wellness education. Our approach is culturally respectful and patient-centered.

Chronic Disease Management

We support patients managing long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Our providers offer education, monitoring, and treatment plans tailored to each individual.

Preventative Dental Care

Our dental program emphasizes prevention through regular exams, cleanings, and education. We also provide restorative services to help maintain healthy smiles.

Behavioral Health

We provide counseling, therapy, and mental health supports for children, youth, adults, and families. Services are confidential, culturally informed, and designed to promote healing and balance.

Substance Use Disorder Program

Our program offers prevention, treatment, and recovery support for those facing substance use challenges. Services include counseling, peer recovery coaching, and referral to additional resources.

Family Counseling

We offer family-based counseling to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and build resilience. Our counselors create safe spaces for healing and growth across generations.

Health Clinics

The Karuk Community Medical Clinics feature six patient rooms, on-site X-ray and laboratory facilities, and an emergency transporter room to meet urgent needs. Serving thousands of patients within a 75-mile radius, our clinics are a vital resource in a region where the nearest hospital is hours away. We are committed to making care accessible and affordable, offering low to no-cost services for Tribal members and the broader river community. Every visit is guided by our promise to deliver high-quality, culturally grounded care close to home.

Dental Clinics

Our Dental Clinics house six operatories, a dedicated hygiene room, and fully equipped sterilization and laboratory spaces to ensure safe, effective care. We provide preventative and restorative dental services for children, adults, and elders, focusing on long-term oral health and wellness. From routine cleanings and exams to treatment and education, our team is committed to delivering culturally respectful, affordable, and accessible dental care for Tribal members and the surrounding communities.

Human Services

The Karuk Tribe Human Services provides services for Tribal and non-tribal Medi-Cal or private insurance including children, youth, families, adults, and older adults, for the prevention, early intervention, and treatment of mental illness and/or substance use conditions. We are committed to supporting the treatment of the whole person to achieve wellness and recovery, and promoting the physical and behavioral health of individuals, families, and communities we serve.

Batterers' Intervention Progam

Emphasizes domestic harmony. Participants will explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, regarding their interactions with others, over 52 sessions. These sessions meet for two hours each week.

Behavioral Health Program

Free and confidential outpatient counseling for Tribal members, addressing personal, family, school, and work-related issues, with culturally sensitive care and sliding scale options for non-Native clients.

Driving Under the Influence (DUI)

A fee-based service is offered to those individuals needing to complete a court or DMV-ordered program to regain their driving privileges.

Substance Use Disorder

Clients can begin the path to recovery, gain skills to live a balanced life, and establish lifelong connections for staying healthy.

Who can receive services from Karuk Health & Human Services?

Our programs serve Karuk Tribal Members, other Native people, and non-Native community members within our service area. We welcome all patients and families who need care.

What kinds of health care are offered at the clinics?

We provide primary medical care, dental services, women’s health, chronic disease management, behavioral health counseling, and substance use recovery supports. Our clinics also feature X-ray, lab services, and an emergency transporter room.

How much do services cost?

Services are provided at low or no cost for Karuk Tribal Members. For non-Tribal patients, we accept Medi-Cal, Medicare, and most private insurance plans. Some services may also be offered on a sliding-scale basis.

How do I make an appointment?

You can call or visit your nearest Karuk clinic or Human Services office to schedule an appointment. Same-day appointments may be available, and our outreach team can help with transportation when needed.
