Advocacy

The Karuk Tribe actively engages in advocacy efforts that protect our sovereignty, natural resources, and the well-being of our communities. This page highlights key issues impacting the Tribe and our local communities. Each section offers historical and cultural context, outlines the Tribe's current initiatives, and connects you with partner organizations and additional resources. Together, these efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to self-determination, environmental stewardship, and cultural resilience.

Land & Natural Resource Management

The Karuk Tribe leads efforts to restore and protect our homelands through sustainable land and water management practices. Guided by traditional knowledge and modern science, these initiatives ensure the health of our ecosystems and the resilience of future generations.

Suction Dredging

Suction dredging is a mining practice that disturbs riverbeds and releases harmful sediments and mercury into the water, threatening fish habitat sand water quality. The Karuk Tribe has long opposed this activity to protect the Klamath River ecosystem, salmon populations, and the cultural lifeways which depend on them.

Cultural Burn Revitalization

The Karuk Tribe is restoring traditional fire practices to heal the land, enhance forest health, and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires. These efforts revive ancestral knowledge and strengthen community stewardship.
