Intern

College and/or vocational students that are interested in interning with the Karuk Tribe in their field of study should apply for consideration. Applicants must be enrolled Karuk tribal members or registered Karuk descendants. Once accepted into our Internship program, students who work successfully within the program will be offered continued employment as an intern during their school breaks each year.

Responsibilities

Standard Conduct

  1. Adheres to Tribe's and Program's confidentiality and personnel policies.
  2. Be available for local and out of the area travel as required for job related training and various activities.
  3. Attends all required meetings, trainings and functions.
  4. Be polite and maintain a priority system in accepting other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Native American youth and family members in culturally diverse environments.
  2. Displays the ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees and the public.
  3. Demonstrates the ability to manage time well and work under stressful conditions with an even temperament.
  4. Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Two letters of recommendation are required. They should not be from relatives and should address:

  • Specific skills related to program of choice

  • Enthusiasm and attitude toward learning
  • Teamwork
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Professionalism

Provide names, relationships, and contact information for individuals providing recommendations.

Criteria

First Year Applicants Must Include:

  1. An essay describing your interest in working for the Tribe, how you would contribute after graduation, and what you hope to learn from the internship.
  2. A resume.
  3. Copy of college transcript.
  4. Copies of awards, honors, or community service records.

Returning Interns Must Include:

  1. Current copy of college transcript.

Other Information

Applicants will be asked about:

  • Driver’s license and driving record.
  • DUI convictions or license suspensions in past 3 years.
  • Recall/layoff status.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Legal right to work in the US.
  • Names of immediate family working for the Tribe.

Criminal Background

Conviction of a crime does not automatically disqualify applicants. Factors such as age, seriousness, rehabilitation, and relevance to the position will be considered. Applicants must disclose guilty/no contest pleas, or convictions, with details including date, location, and outcome.

Certifications

Applicants must acknowledge and sign to confirm:

  2. Authorization to Investigate: Tribe may verify background with schools, agencies, or employers.
  3. Consent to Contact Past Employers: Past employers may share personnel history.
  4. Consent to Contact Government Agencies: Tribe may request records from courts and agencies.
  5. Cooperation with Investigation: Applicants must cooperate with background checks.
  6. Falsification Statement: False information may result in rejection or dismissal.
  7. Employment At Will: Employment may be terminated by either party at any time.
  8. Release: Applicants release the Tribe and related parties from liability regarding the application process.

Tribal Preference Policy

In accordance with the TERO Ordinance 93-0-01, Tribal Preference will be observed in hiring.

It is the policy of the Karuk Tribe to provide preference in hiring to qualified applicants claiming Veteran’s Preference who have been discharged from the United States Armed Forces with honorable or under honorable conditions.
