The mission of the Tribe is “to promote the general welfare of all Karuk people, to establish equality and justice for our tribe, to restore and preserve Tribal traditions, customs, language and ancestral rights, and to secure to ourselves and our descendants the power to exercise the inherent rights of self-governance.” The Karuk Language Committee will be formed to (1) Guide the development of the Language Department by providing support and oversight for upcoming grant applications; and (2) Review, modify, and approve the Karuk Tribe’s 10-Year Language Department Strategic Plan for Organizational Development, among other functions.
Once convened, the Karuk Language Committee will meet the second Friday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in Happy Camp, CA. Committee Members are expected to limit travel as much as necessary to attend meetings and utilize phone or video conferencing technology whenever possible. Committee Members are compensated with $200 stipends as compensation for their time spent participating in monthly meetings. Mileage will be paid to Committee Members who must travel to Happy Camp from another community at the currently approved federal POV rate.
