Judicial Advisory Committee
The Karuk Tribe is seeking Tribal Members to serve on the Judicial Advisory Committee (KJAC), which helps ensure the ethical operation of the Tribal Court while supporting strategic planning, outreach, and education. Members meet quarterly, may attend special meetings, and receive stipends and mileage reimbursement for their participation.
The Karuk Tribe is currently accepting Applications for Consideration from Tribal Members to serve on the Judicial Advisory Committee (KJAC). Please complete a letter of intent and the attached application for consideration detailing your experience and expertise and a letter(s) of recommendation, and submit it to Karuk Human Resources Department for consideration.
Purpose of the KJAC Committee
The KJAC Committee was created for the following purposes:
- Assist in ensuring the ethical operation of the Tribal Court, in order to uphold the honesty, honor and integrity of the Tribal Court.
- Assist with strategic planning.
- Assist with outreach and education.
Meetings
The Committee meets quarterly at the Karuk Tribal Court Facility in Yreka. Meetings will rotate between Orleans, Happy Camp, and Yreka sites. Special meetings may also be held. Meeting location will be held virtually and in-person. Members are expected to travel as necessary to attend meetings, trainings, and conferences. Members are compensated with $200.00 stipends for their time at meetings. Mileage is paid if the meeting location requires travel.
Eligibility
In order to qualify for appointment to the Committee, a person must submit:
- Proof of legal physical residency within a one hundred (100) road mile radius of the exterior boundaries of the Karuk lands. Proof shall consist of three (3) items of evidence equivalent to what candidates for the Tribal Council must submit pursuant to Chapter 4.05 KTC, Elections.
- A statement of intent containing the reasons for wanting to serve on the Committee, judicial philosophy, and other background as applicable to the position.
- At least one (1) letter of recommendation stating that because of the esteem in which they hold the candidate, that the candidate should be appointed to one (1) of the positions on the Judicial Oversight Committee.
Note: A candidate will be responsible for ensuring the ethical operation of the Tribal Court, in order to uphold the honesty, honor and integrity of the Tribal Court. Thus, no person shall serve on the Committee who would not qualify to serve on the Tribal Council. (KTC 4.05.110)
Requirements
- Candidate must be a Karuk Tribal Member.
- Must be 18 years old or older at the time of appointment.
- Must adhere to strict confidentiality requirements and are required to sign a mandatory confidentiality declaration. Committee members are subject to the same standards of confidentiality as court personnel, social service workers, and other professionals.
- Must adhere to the conflict of interest policy of the Karuk Tribe.
- Must regularly attend in-person and virtual meetings.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Attend meetings and participate in occasional phone votes.
- Provide recommendations to the Tribal Council pertaining to strategic planning, outreach, and education, and recommendations relevant to ensuring the ethical operation of the Tribal Court, in order to uphold the honesty, honor, and integrity of the Tribal Court.
- Engage in further activities, trainings, or meetings as determined by the Council.
Additional Requirements
The Karuk Tribe’s Drug & Alcohol Policy applies. If selected, applicants must successfully pass a drug screening test and be willing to submit to a criminal background check.
