CARB awarded nearly $7.3 million in planning and capacity- building grants to 16 projects statewide following unprecedented demand. The program received an abundance of applications requesting nearly $38 million collectively. Of 84 applications, 75 advanced to the scoring round, and KDOT was one of the 16 selected to receive funding.

The Clean Transportation Pathways Project is designed to support and strengthen rural Tribal transit resilience, with project leaders focusing on building long- term transportation capacity for the Karuk communities.

“We are honored to be selected by CARB and grateful for this opportunity to strengthen transportation options for our Tribal citizens,” said Chairman Russell “Buster” Attebery. “While living along the river provides a deep connection to our homelands, transportation can often be a challenge for many of our community members. This project will help us identify solutions that improve access, increase mobility, and make it easier for our membership to travel safely and participate in the services, programs, and cultural activities that enrich our communities.”

As the project begins, KDOT is also celebrating the upcoming installation of its new Tribal Transportation and Transit Offices. The new facility represents an important investment in the future of transportation services and will support efforts to expand safe, affordable, and reliable transportation options for Tribal citizens and the surrounding communities.

“The Department of Transportation is quickly growing with the inclusion of a Transit Department, and we' re excited that we will finally have a location of our own to continue to expand and provide excellent services to our communities,” says Misty Rickwalt, Transportation Director.

The Clean Transportation Pathways Project lays the groundwork for future transportation investments while supporting community priorities, sustainability, and long- term resilience. By strengthening transportation infrastructure and planning capacity today, the Karuk Tribe is helping create a more connected and accessible future for generations to come.
