What is Measles?
Measles is a viral infection that can lead to serious health complications. It spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area, making it highly contagious.
Signs and Symptoms:
Symptoms of measles typically appear 7 to 14 days after exposure and may include:
• High fever
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
• A distinctive red rash that usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body
Complications from measles can be severe, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death, particularly in young children and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Treatment:
There is no specific antiviral treatment for measles. Supportive care is essential, which may include:
• Rest
• Hydration
• Over-the-counter medications to reduce fever and relieve discomfort
In cases of severe complications, hospitalization may be required.
Vaccination:
The best way to prevent measles is through vaccination. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and effective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children receive two doses of the MMR vaccine:
• The first dose at 12 to 15 months of age
• The second dose at 4 to 6 years of age
Adults who have not been vaccinated or are unsure of their vaccination status should consult with their healthcare provider about getting vaccinated.
Community Action:
The Karuk Tribe encourages all community members to review their vaccination status and ensure that they and their children are up to date on the MMR vaccine. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of measles, please seek medical attention immediately and avoid contact with others to prevent further spread of the virus.
For more information about measles, vaccination, and community health resources, please visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/measles or contact your local healthcare provider.
Together, we can protect our community from measles and ensure the health and safety of all our members.
