[Karuk, California] — The Karuk Tribe is pleased to announce that it has been awarded $1,505,000 through the Indian Health Service (IHS) Staff Quarters Construction Program to support the development of workforce housing for essential healthcare staff serving Tribal communities.

The Karuk Tribe's proposal was ranked among the top eight applications selected for full funding out of 22 eligible applications nationwide, demonstrating the strength of the Tribe's vision and commitment to addressing critical workforce housing needs in rural and underserved communities.

The funding will support the construction of three new three-bedroom staff housing units designed to accommodate healthcare professionals and other essential personnel serving the Tribe and surrounding communities. The homes will be constructed as stick-built, single-family residences and will be part of a larger workforce housing development already well underway.

Access to safe, quality housing remains one of the most significant challenges in recruiting and retaining healthcare professionals in rural Tribal communities. By expanding available staff housing, the Karuk Tribe will strengthen its ability to attract and retain qualified personnel, improve continuity of care, and enhance health services for Tribal members.

“This award reflects an important investment in the future of our community,” said Russell “Buster” Attebery, Tribal Chairman of the Karuk Tribe. “Housing is a critical component of building and sustaining a strong workforce that delivers essential services to our people. These new homes will help us recruit and retain the professionals needed to support critical programs, strengthen our workforce, and contribute to the Tribe’s long-term stability, growth, and resilience.”

The staff quarters project aligns with the Tribe's broader efforts to expand housing opportunities, strengthen community infrastructure, and improve access to healthcare services throughout its service area.

Construction is anticipated to begin following final project approvals and completion of pre-construction requirements.
