The Karuk Tribe is seeking members for the Tribal Gaming Authority to oversee and guide the Tribe’s Gaming Enterprise, including operations, budgeting, compliance, and supervision of management. Members must meet eligibility and licensing requirements, attend regular meetings, and maintain confidentiality while serving.

The Karuk Tribe is currently accepting applications for consideration to serve on the Tribal Gaming Authority. The Gaming Authority oversees the Gaming Enterprise of the Tribe and exercises all of the governmental and proprietary powers and rights of the Gaming Enterprise regarding the operation, management, and promotion of the Tribe’s Gaming Enterprise.

If you are interested in becoming a Gaming Authority Board Member, please complete a letter of intent detailing your experience and expertise, and submit your letter of intent to the Karuk Human Resources Office for consideration.

Eligibility and Requirements

  1. Tribal Members, Descendants, and community members residing in one of the Karuk Tribe’s Districts are eligible to serve.
  2. District Residency Areas:
    • Orleans District: Orleans, Weitchpec/Hoopa, Somes Bar, Forks of Salmon/Sawyers Bar, Weaverville, Crescent City, Klamath, McKinleyville, Arcata, Eureka, Fortuna, and Rio Dell.
    • Happy Camp District: Happy Camp, Seiad Valley, Klamath River, Scott Bar, O’Brien, Cave Junction, and Grants Pass.
    • Yreka District: Yreka, Montague, Fort Jones, Etna, Hornbrook, Ashland, Talent, Phoenix, Medford, and Central Point.
  3. Candidates must be 21 years old at the time of appointment.
  4. Candidates must meet the requirements of the Tribal Gaming Authority Ordinance and Tribal Gaming Authority Bylaws.
  5. Candidates must obtain a Gaming License from the Tribal Gaming Commission by passing a comprehensive background investigation prior to assuming office.
  6. Candidates must maintain licensure during their term as a Gaming Authority Board Member.
  7. Candidates must adhere to strict confidentiality.
  8. Selected candidates will not be allowed to engage in any type of gaming activities at Rain Rock Casino while serving as a Gaming Authority Board Member.
  9. Other responsibilities, requirements, and non-conflict of interest assurances may be required and will be clarified as part of the selection and orientation process.
  10. Ineligible Categories – the following individuals are ineligible for appointment to the Authority:
    1. Individuals who have been convicted and served a sentence (including parole) within the past ten (10) years for a felony or misdemeanor involving violence, fraud, or financial wrongdoing.
    2. Individuals who have been terminated from employment or had a judgment awarded against them for a civil violation involving violence, fraud, or financial wrongdoing.
    3. Individuals who have ever had an interest in a competing gaming facility.
    4. Individuals who are unable to meet the requirements of a Class A License through the Tribal Gaming Commission.
    5. Individuals who the Tribal Council otherwise finds to lack good moral character.

Duties (Include but Are Not Limited To)

  • Exercise governmental and proprietary powers and rights of the Tribe over the Gaming Enterprise, as set forth in Article II of the Karuk Tribal Gaming Ordinance.
  • Prepare and approve the Gaming Enterprise budget and provide the Tribal Council with a copy of the budget annually.
  • Provide monthly reports to the Tribal Council.
  • Supervise the Gaming Enterprise’s General Manager.
  • Actively participate in regular weekly or bi-weekly meetings, with additional attendance of emergency and special meetings as necessary.

Seats, Meetings, and Terms

  • Authority Board Members receive a per-meeting stipend in addition to mileage for non-local travel to attend meetings.
  • One (1) seat on the Karuk Tribal Gaming Authority will be filled with a 3-year initial term.
  • Following the initial term, Authority Board Members shall each serve four (4) year terms in accordance with the Karuk Tribal Gaming Authority Ordinance.

Selection

  • All successful candidates will be appointed by a majority vote of the Karuk Tribal Council.
