Natural Resources Technician I - Fisheries
The Natural Resources Technician I (NRTI) – Fisheries is an entry-level position under direct supervision of the Natural Resources Technician III/Field Crew Supervisor. This role assists the Karuk Tribe’s Department of Natural Resources (KDNR) Fisheries Program staff with tasks related to the protection and preservation of Tribal-trust species.
Summary
The Natural Resources Technician I (NRTI) – Fisheries is an entry-level position under direct supervision of the Natural Resources Technician III/Field Crew Supervisor. This role assists the Karuk Tribe’s Department of Natural Resources (KDNR) Fisheries Program staff with tasks related to the protection and preservation of Tribal-trust species. Duties may include implementing research projects, operating rotary screw traps, biological sampling, fish kill monitoring and response, water quality data collection, and nutrient grab sampling within the Middle Klamath River Sub basin and its tributaries. This position may also serve in the capacity of Cultural Resources Technician I if qualified. The position is funding-dependent and requires ongoing acquisition of continued and subsequent funding.
Responsibilities
- Assist in biological data collection using seines, mask and snorkel, electro-fishing, and beach/boat seines.
- Assist in maintenance of biological and hydrological sampling equipment.
- Assist in construction, placement, maintenance, and monitoring of out migrant rotary screw traps.
- Collect and record fish health conditions, fish abundance, and distribution information; report findings to designated staff.
- Collect scale samples and recover coded wire tags for age composition and stock origin analysis.
- Attend all monitoring and training sessions during deployment of sampling gear to ensure consistent protocol.
- Complete bi-annual training courses, including CPR/First Aid and swift water rescue certification.
- Work cooperatively with KDNR staff, Tribes, agencies, and the public.
- Follow all survey techniques and protocols.
- Assist with other duties within the Watersheds Branch as directed.
Qualifications
- Ability to work effectively with Native American people in culturally diverse environments.
- Ability to manage time well and work under stressful conditions with composure.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with employees and the public.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Prior knowledge of Karuk culture and traditions preferred.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; or equivalent education/experience (2 years experience = 1 year education).
- Ability to make sound, independent judgments.
- Advanced swimming skills and good physical condition.
- Ability to work odd hours and camp in the field for extended periods.
- Reliable transportation to arrive at work on time.
- Effective, efficient, and timely production of assigned work while maintaining data security.
- Responsible for safe work practices and maintaining a secure work environment.
- Must pass pre-employment drug screening and submit to a criminal background check.
- Must adhere to Karuk Tribe policies and procedures.
