Indian Child Welfare Committee
The Karuk Tribe is seeking members for the Indian Child Welfare Committee with the purpose of protecting the best interests of the child and promoting the stability and security of the Karuk Tribe and its Indian families. The ICW Committee is an advisory committee to the Karuk Tribal Council and/or Karuk Tribal Health Board. The Committee meets at least once each month in Happy Camp. Members are expected to travel as necessary to attend meetings, In-State trainings, and ICWA CA State conference if travel funds are available.
The Karuk Tribe is currently accepting Applications for Consideration from Tribal Members to serve on the Indian Child Welfare (ICW) Committee. Please complete a letter of intent and/or the attached application for consideration detailing your experience and expertise and submit it to Karuk Human Resources Department for consideration.
The ICW Committee was created for the purpose of protecting the best interests of the child and promoting the stability and security of the Karuk Tribe and its Indian families. The ICW Committee is an advisory committee to the Karuk Tribal Council and/or Karuk Tribal Health Board.
The Committee meets at least once each month in Happy Camp. Members are expected to travel as necessary to attend meetings, In-State trainings, and ICWA CA State conference if travel funds are available. Members are compensated with $200 stipends for their time at meetings. Mileage is paid if the meeting location requires travel.
Eligibility and Requirements:
• Candidate must be an enrolled Karuk Tribal Member.
• Candidate must adhere to the Karuk Tribe’s drug and alcohol policy.
• Candidate must pass a background check.
• Candidate must be 18 years old or older at the time of appointment.
• Must adhere to strict confidentiality requirements. Confidentiality of case information and other Indian Child Welfare Committee records shall be maintained. Committee members are subject to the same standards of confidentiality as court personnel, social service workers and other professionals, and are required to sign a mandatory confidentiality declaration.
• Must adhere to Conflict of Interest Policy.
• Knowledge of the Indian Child Welfare Act preferred.
• Must regularly attend in-person meetings.
Duties (Include but Are Not Limited To):
• Meet monthly in Happy Camp and participate in occasional phone votes.
• Provide recommendations to the Tribal Council on child welfare matters and recommend policies and procedures for implementing federal and Tribal child welfare law;
• Monitor child welfare proceedings involving tribal members in state and tribal court(s);
• Be advised of pending state court proceedings as provided in the Indian Child Welfare Act and make recommendations regarding intervention in such proceedings and transfer of jurisdiction from state court to Tribal jurisdiction;
• Approval of ICW Committee travel and training.
• Make case management recommendations to the social worker regarding the care, custody, supervision of Tribal children, including Tribal Customary Adoptions (TCA) recommendations to the Karuk Tribal Council and/or Karuk Tribal Health Board.
• Engage in further cultural and/or activities as to protect and improve the welfare of the children of the Karuk Tribe.
• The Karuk Tribe does not enter into Descendant cases in State Court as a legal party to a case.
