Tessa Scroggin-Lake ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

Greetings Honored Karuk People,

My name is Tessa Scroggin-Lake I am of Lakota and Euro decent.

I will be graduating with my Master’s from Southern Oregon University in January 2012. I am also an older student. Over the years I have had the opportunity to meet some Karuk people at ceremonies and Pow Wows in the Northwest.

My Master’s paper is a collection of stories from Elders. The content is owned completely by the Elders and intended to be a text for college students. It is dedicated to  Native students. The Elders are asked what they would like to share in these times with the people. They make the decision as to which stories to share. I ask for at least four from each elder. They can be personal stories, historical stories, deep historical stories or stories about what ever the Elder contributer feels is important to share.

The stories are collected in the storyteller’s Native language as well as English when  ever possible. With permission the storyteller is videotaped besides being recorded. The text is written just as it is told and final approval of the storyteller is required before anything is printed.

I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Californnia Davis studying mechanical engineering. In an effort to take advantage of my time at UC Davis and study subjects other than engineering, I decided to take a Native American Studies class. I have no Native American heritage, but feel this is a part of history that I would like to know more about. My class led me to this site, in which I was pleased to read about the Karuk Tribe, it's community, and the numerous programs and organizations that aim to strengthen each person.

hello ~

on the 8th of may my home in nutriso, az burned to the ground during the "wallow" fire.

i've had very little to no help from the federal and state agencies we have all been told are there to provide assistance in these situations.

my karuk tribal id card went the way of most of my possessions. do you think you could send me another? i have downloaded the form from your website. or could you just send me a copy?

the lady at the tucson indian center has offered to help with our utilities for a month if i provide my identification from the tribe. this has been our only positive response from anyone other than a box of bedding and polo shirts which came from the salvation army.

the only communication via the internet i have available to me is at the library, but i try to get down here to check it at least every other day.

thank you,

jim

I am a genealogist and have a friend who I think may be a part- blood tribal member.  She states that her great grandmother was taken by a whiteman about 1880's and she took a white name.  We do not know her native american name.  Her tribe was in the southern Oregon area when she was taken.  My friend  looks very much like several tribal members that appear in the newsletter.

Does the tribe have a DNA project that her father could take to help prove tribal affiliation?

As a student here in the University of California Davis, I decided to enroll in a Native American Studies class this spring quarter. The class I am enrolled in teaches us general concepts of Native American tradition, history, and issues that are still occuring within the Native American community. We were assigned to share our thoughts on web sites that pertained to specific Native American tribes.

Before this class, I had little knowledge about tribes in California, and through this class, I beileve I have to come to a deeper understanding of identity and appreciation heritage and tradition in both my culture and cultures of the world.

I am interested in the Karuk Tribe because I am a member. I am enrolled and have a role number. I would like very much if you could email my roll number to me.

My grandfather was Ernest LeRoy Godfrey and my mother is Margaret Godfrey. My mother has lost our paperwork with our roll numbers. My grandfather was very proud to be Native American and a member of the Karuk Tribe. He instilled that pride in his grandchildren. He was 50% native and my mother is 25% native. That makes me 1/8. My great grandmother's name was Sadie. I believe she is 100% Native American from the Karuk, Yurok and Shasta tribes. My great aunt Jenny was my grandfather's half sister and was 100% Native American.

I haven't learned much more then that because of the lack of official records. If you have any information about my family, I would greatly appreciate that information.

Will you please send me my roll number?

I am 51 years old and very intersested with any information about the Karuk Tribe. Language, religion, etc. I want the second half of my life to be filled with as much information about my native roots as possible. I wish I wouldn't have waited so long.

Thank you for reading my email and I eagerly anticipate your response.

                                                  Warmest Regards,

My Great Grand Uncle, Alvirus Ferris, lived in Orleans, Humbolt, California and was married to a member of the Karuk Tribe.  I would like to learn more about them and their family and hope you can help me.  I have three names and don't know if they are the same person or if they are different persons.  The names I have are:

Et-va-tapuctom / Mary Karak / Wildey Stone

Alvirus Ferris was born 14 April 1832 in Michigan.  He died7 April 1913 in California.  I think he was married to Wildey Stone.

I also have an Alvarus Ferris born about 1870 in Orleans, Humboldt, California and died 24 Mar 1970 in Eureka, Humboldt, California.  I think he was married to Mary Belle Stoddard. And I wonder if he was the son of Alvirus Ferris born 14 April as listed above.

Can you help me?

I watched the movie, Rivers of Renewal which tells some of the story about the Klamath River, and the Karuk.  I lead a Water Justice Road Trip for young adults aged 18-35 each summer, visiting various places around California where water and justice issues come together.  We have visited people in the Central Valley who can't drink their water because it is polluted by agriculture, seen the great distances LA water comes from, visited the pumping stations that bring water to the San Francisco bay and many other places.  As I watch the movie, Rivers of Renewal, I think it would be interesting to meet you, and see where the PacificCorp dams are being taken down.

Thanks for your website!

Ayukii,  I am Karuk on my mothers side of the family. The last name was White.  My Wife is also Karuk from her mothers side and Sioux from her fathers side of the family.  Sandy has ordered Karuk language books.  She has made many 3x5 cards with words we practice. We are beginners to say the least but enjoy learning the language.  We both grew up in the Redding area.  My grandparents lived in Happy Camp for many years.  Some of my fondest memories as a child in the 70's were visiting them there.  My first fish I caught was with my grandfather on the Klamath river.  kuyâapkuh

My best friend is Karuk/Alaskian Native.  My interest in the Native American culture started every since I can remember.  My adopted neighbor grandmother introducted me to Arizona's Native's culture and sites when I was 9 years old.  I started reading Tom Brown Jr.'s books which a friend gave me to help cope with the lose of my best friend in the world, my grandmother of 95 years old.  Elders are the best friends anyone can have, with their wisdom and knowledge.  If the young people of today would listen to them, this world would be a MUCH better place.  I have not one cell of Native American blood in me, but I feel like I do.  I'm always looking to read books of true history of Native American culture and the old stories and mainly of California.  I am a 5 generation Northern Californian (Grass Valley/Sacramento) of English/German decent.  Thank you to All Native Americans!!!

I lived with my parents in the 1960's in the town of Somes Bar, CA.  I attended Junction Elementry school with my younger brother Joel Menter.  We lived in a log cabin on Salmon River road just passed the bridge that crossed the river.  I heard it has since burned due to a forest fire.  We lived about a mile from the Somes Bar General Store and Ish Pish falls.  My father was a Native and he was dear friends with Walter Hastings in Yreka and Grandma Tripp in Somes Bar.  Grandma Tripp taught us so much about living off the grid and she was such a lovely person.  When I was sick she would bring wild blackberry juice to sooth my stomach and she taught us how to recognize and pick the wild jumpinish tea (sp?)  I went to school with many of the Tripp family and it was the happiest times of my life.  My father has passed and I am returning to the land I love.  I have never forgotten the blessed life we lived in the mountains.  My father was named George (Bill) Menter and he was a preacher.  For a time we lived in Yreka and he pastored a Native American church on Miner Street.  We were good friends with the Law family there.  I would love to re contact some of the people who made such a difference in our lives. Blessings:  Doreen Menter Patranato :)

Hi,

I am with Ayazuta (connect).  Because of our desire to help keep Native Children connected to their Heritage, we have created a database for comprehensive and accurate contact details for ICWA matters in all Tribes.

My job is to contact each Tribe (hopefully eevery 6 months) in order to update their ICWA contact details.  I like to research each Tribe first, looking up their Tribal Website (if they have one) and trying to learn more about them.

I am part Indian on my father's side; do not know which Tribe as it has never been spoken of and still is not.

I wish I was able to read more about the history of your people on your website.

However, I love the pictures on your website!  And I am in awe of the skilled basket weaving!

Tara Mattis ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ): Queen of the Nobodies

My husband and I had the pleasure of meeting several of the Karuk people a few years ago at the first Siskiyou Field Institute class.  I am delighted to see that preserving your language is in your mission statement.  I've spent my life amongst many different original Americans, heard a handful of the old tongues- and yours was the most pleasing to the ear of any!

The culture that speaks this way must have a beautiful center.  Worth preserving!  So many of the first people have been removed from their center and have no group memory of where is was, what is was like.  For all your travails, ya'all must know how lucky your people are to still have this memory and a center.  Remember this and you will always be strong.  (Keeping head above water can be a different story, even if one's heart is strong...)  Maybe one day I'll be fortunate enough to share the renewal the world or maybe least myself with you.  I am tired.

I heard a rumor about how you guys got screwed by participating in a Federal National Fire Plan project.  I'll look around this tribal site for more info; if this rumor is true, I can use your misfortune to help break the US DOI up!  And I'm not just blowin' smoke.  BLM, who I've been battling for over two years already is now bring the same opportunity to our village.

Is there someone I could phone or write that could tell me more about such an event  --whether or not it even happened?

He returned home to ths Somes Bar area, some years back. My son would be overjoyed to find him again. My son Chris Meador has been ill for some time now, not much time left! Would appreciate any help you could offer locating him, my phone number is 360-694-7698. I will continue to pray that they can cross paths again, thank you very much.

I am applying for a teaching job in the Klamath-Trinity School District.  I am visiting this site so that I can learn more about your community.  My family has lived in Humboldt County for almost 30 years.  I've taught in Crescent City, Eureka, Fortuna, Miranda and many other parts of the county, also Napa,  but never in your area.  Your website is interesting and easy to navigate.  Whether I am hired or not, I will probably continue to visit this site as well as the sites for the Hoopa and Yurok tribes to learn more.
